looks like the only way forward it to have many heroes staggered in leveling to keep busy with missions and OPs while waiting on long training times. Or do what Playdom wants us to do, and just go reaching for the gold..

Yes, absolutely, and it is incredibly frustrating. 8000 silver for level 6? when each mission barely nets me a few hundred coins? sure, farming the flight deck will get me some more but a) i can't use the hero's who are "flying" for anything else while they're off doing that, rendering me incapable of actually playing the game during this time, and b) it's not fun to do, which makes me dislike a game that otherwise is a lot of fun!

You think 8000 for level 6 is bad?! Wow - it just falls off a cliff after level 7 - 30000 repeating silver (much less 50K, or 100K) is simply untenable with the low payouts for the flights.
I'm glad everyone's seeing how unbalanced this 4x pricing structure (and increased training costs) is - it sucks much of the fun out of the game.
Also - Sakyo - Level 4 to Level 5 is 902 XP.

We have 3 ways to approach the game in order to cope with increasing silver demand as you level up.
1. Have an excuse to be in front of a pc or use a mobile device with internet connections everyday for stretches of hours, doing the 3, 10 or 20min remotes ops like crazy. Great way to earn lots of silver, eventually having millions of it you won't know where to spend it all.
2. Log in every few hours using 1, 2 or 6 hr remote ops cause you cannot be glued to a pc or have no mobile device with net. This is where most people are categorized and are usually coming up short on silver on everything.
3. Get frustrated about silver, whine about it on forums, threaten Playdom and quit altogether.
You forgot another approach you could take, Sakyo:
4. Continue to advocate and publicize the pricing problem and try to apply pressure to Playdom to change the numbers, as they've already proven they can change them.
I'm already taking approach 1. Another change in prices, this time lower, is highly unlikely unless a HUGE amount of pressure is applied on Playdom.
