I usually use the burn tool and burn the base color 2-4 times depending on how light/dark the original color is. I rarely use black unless the color is supposed to be black or some very faint black...

Except I really don't like it when black is used for shading on colors :x I rarely need to shade two colors, but when I do I have to use two different shading colors.
