On the SL forums, I have already seen a lot of people complaining why such a low level attacker can win from them, and also a lot of wrong information. So here's my theory.
1) attackers have a serious attack advantage (around 30%). If an attacker with 100 charm attacks one with 100 pop, the attacker will ALWAYS win. Even when the defender has 130 pop, then the attacker has still a good winning chance. The defender needs at least 150 pop to win always.
2) skill points add 1/3 of a glam charm or pop to each of your "real" fighters. Not to the boarders. So, if you have 500 sisters and you are above level 100, then a skill point is worth 167 charm or pop.
Now some practical REAL examples:
- player A, level 135, 520 sisters, 450 skill point charm, attacks stefan, level 203, 1015 sisters, 364 skill point pop.
total charm player A: 82 x 520 + 167 x 450 = 118,000 (rounded)
total pop stefan: 71 x 1015 + 167 x 364 = 133,000
Result: player A will win most of his attacks.
- stefan, level 203, 1015 sisters, 182 skill point charm, attacks player B, level 250, 550 sisters, 500 skill point pop.
total charm stefan: 79 x 1015 + 167 x 182 = 110,000
total pop player B: 75 x 550 + 167 x 500 = 125,000
Result: stefan wil win most of his attacks.
My theory fits for both attack and defense, so it should be correct. If you take another value for a skill point, one of the two examples above will give an impossible result.

I recently used a level 105 to attack a level 189, dealing 161 damage to my rival and taking 150 damage to myself. When I check what she is defending with, she fights with 540 items of accessories, outfits, rides and boyfriends while I am only using 525 of them. Here is what they give me:
Their equipment score: 35,692
Popularity skill points: 85
My equipment score: 39,348
My charm skill points: 4
Let me know how to calculate it.
Here's something I've been wondering:
How come sometimes you attack the same person twice (or they attack you) and once you win and the next time you lose (or viceversa)?
If your glam and skill points haven't changed, is there an external factor affecting the outcome of the fight?

I think there is an attack multiplier... so if you were to tally your total skill points and charm then toss the multiplier of anywhere from 1.0-2.0 then you have your curve.

Their total popularity: about 50,000
Your total charm: about 40,000
The difference is within 30%, so you have a good chance to win.

Thank you for the discussion!!!
Now, here is my situation and I'd appreciate some feedback.
I have a purely defensive character. I don't attack.
Stats as follows:
Level 192
Charm 11
Popularity 375
Max Confidence 808
Max Stamina 50
I try to only buy and keep items with a high popularity.
I'm still losing fights (obviously, I can't win 'em all, but I'd like too :-))
What can I do for my character to maximize wins?

375 popularity is not so much at this level. You wasted a lot of skill points to confidence and stamina, because you're not attacking. With a 100 skill points more to popularity it would have been much better.
I advise you to get more boarders. Eventually you can get some from other characters, if you don't want to spend money for this game. With the maximum number of boarders, you should be safe. (With exeption of the super-attackers created by the high-level bot players, but they don't attack you if you're not annoying them)
Also better glam can help a bit: e.g. the pink convertibles and the first prizes of the raffle.

In the first example I get the 520 and the 450. Those would be sisters and SP's respectively. But, where are you getting the bolded numbers from? Also, you've listed the player's current level. Does that matter at all, or is it irrelevant?

I used the skill points on confidence and stamina to get the badges.
What's the maximum number of borders? I currently have 49.
I'm always buying high pop glam every time something decent comes up.
Other suggestions would be welcome!

The 167 is the charm or pop value of a skill point. The numbers of 82, 71, 79 and 75 are the average glam charm or pop of each sister. Mine are calculated, the ones of the opponent estimated. The level doesn't matter.

These badges gave you each only ONE brownie...
At level 192, you can fight with 960 sisters, that means 460 boarders. A fully equipped boarder has about 70 pop, so you can better buy boarders instead of LE items.

Okay, I am at level 142. I have over 600 sisters with only about 19 being boarders. I have over a thousand articles of clothing and accessories. When I fight it only appears to let me use 519. Why?

After level 100, you can only use 500 of your sisters to fight, only boarders add to you fight total. :)
edit: So you only need (at the moment) 519 of the best charm and pop glam items.

I would like to know why lower level players (Level 46) can just keep attacking me (Level 114) but I'm not allowed to attack them back?

Are you losing these attacks? If so, you should be able to retaliate even if they're lower levels. If you're winning them, well... it wouldn't be fair for a level 114 (who has possibly a lot more sisters and access to much better glam to fight with) to be able to crush a level 46, that's why the game is set up that way. And if you're winning, then I don't see what the problem is, really - it ups your stats and gives you influence. Also, you may have been attacked by a higher level player who then switched to a lower level character. If that's the case, you won't be able to retaliate before they go back to their higher level character.

If you lose, you can attack them back. But if you win, what do you want more?

Actually someone in Mobsters section posted about how the fighting formula looks like. The skill points from charm and popularity has a weight of about 33.38% per usable fighting member (including boarders). Not sure if this is increased due to the introduction of boyfriends. The value of charm can be worth as much as 1.875 (=1.5/0.8) popularity.
Going to add this here because I think it is relative to this post.
It is what I have come up with on how they figure out attack and defense results.
Defense={( 33.38% of your skill points * your mob size)+ equipment} - a random number btween 0 and 20%
Attack={( 33.38% of your skill points * your mob size)+ equipment} + a random number btween 0 and 50%
Those are bases, and do not include increases or critical/spiriteds.
