Papa John's Garden

I went outside and planted my REAL garden! We are finally past the last frost date and the baby was having a nap.
Peas, beans, squash, lettuce, turnips, carrots, pumpkins, cucumbers, etc.

Sounds yummy once it's grown and ripe.

I was able to get my garden in a couple of weeks ago but I've already had to replace a tomato plant - early blight has reached this area and now I have to spray fungicide on all my tomatoes.
The best part of my GOT garden? No weeds!
lol i just posted about my day in cybers post. I'm sure everyone on the forum is a better gardener than me. Every year I have high hopes and every year I fail....I think the problem is that vegetables need sun! Vancouver=rain Plus, when we moved into our house many years ago, we planted 7 trees as part of our landscaping design, they are about 75 feet high now. Great idea at the time, even great idea now, provide wonderful shade during the heat of summer, but just try and find a small patch of dirt that is not in the shade for a minimum of four hours :sigh:
Papa I planted a pumpkin too lol, every year it's the one we carve for halloween. I am always amazed at the bio mass it creates-how can one little seed turn into that HUGE thing?!!

My garden usually has it's fair share of disappointment also.
Last year my tomatoes got so big they over-shaded the beans planted behind. I only have a plot the size of a large flowerbed, so it's more of a summer experiment than a way of providing for our family.
Try some tomatoes in pots, you can move them into sunny spots. :)

I let my mom take care of my garden. Have black thumbs, she is a farmers daughter. We have stuff like dill, parsley, potatoes, sweet peas, salat, spinage and other fast growing stuff. And of course my favorite: strawberries and raspberries. We will see if this year will be as fruitful as last year, as we still have jam left from last years crop.

I planted asparagus for the first time this year. I guess they will be teaching me patience as you don't harvest your first crop for two years. I waited and waited until finally one skinny little stock came up. Now the are starting to branch out and one is even starting to get that fuzzy fern look.

I'm so envious of your gardens you guys! I haven't had one since we moved to Colorado in '92. I always worked on the grounds when the kids were playing, loved getting dirty and turns out it was also great therapy. That will be my big goal for next spring - get the soil ready and all. Lots of sun here, actually more days of sun than Florida each year, but semi-arid so gotta water regularly. I have 3 boy dogs and have to protect the flowers from their aim! lol I hope you'll comment on your progress this summer, I enjoy hearing about it! Best of luck.

My bane are my daughter's 3 cats! They love laying in my pots & killing my plants! No yard just plant in large pots...tomatoes? Dead! Bell peppers? Dead! Cukes? Dead! Not going outside in 90+ degree weather in May? Expensive!
